Radon and Radon Inspection Overview

The EPA (click on link) recommends Radon testing for every home in the United States . Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the US behind smoking and is responsible for approximately 22,000 deaths each year. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is emitted by the decay process of Radium; found in most all soils in this country. Since it is in the form of a gas, it can seep or be drawn into all homes, thus necessating the recommendation for a Radon test. See the EPA's Radon Site map for levels of Radon around the country.

A Radon test is a precise measurement of the amount of Radon by-products in the air taken by a sensitive electronic continuous Radon monitor (CRM). The monitor is placed in the lowest possible area of the home that could be lived in. If the home has a basement (finished or unfinished) it is placed there.  If the home is on a slab, it is simply placed in an appropriate location on the main floor. The monitor must run a minimum of 48 hours to achieve an accurate test result.

Once the monitor is retrieved, results are known that same day. If the results are over the EPA's action level of 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air), remediation is recommended. Typical remediation costs rarely exceed $1,200 to $1,500, but can cost more under some circumstances. Remediation is simple and effective.
