Energy Audit Overview

A home energy audit is a comprehensive evaluation of your home from the outside into the interior, including the attic, crawl space and or basement. My audits are completely unbiased!  Don't be fooled by companies (including the big energy providers) that have a vested interest in conducting the audit.  Even though their audits are free, they are biased and will attempt to sell you something.

An energy audit takes into consideration the age of the home and condition of the: windows and doors outside, sealant around the windows and doors, tree coverage, direction home faces and how many windows are on each side.  Windows are the single largest contributor of heat gain and heat loss in a home.  Did you know a home either breaths out or sucks in air, depending on how well it is sealed on the outside?  Air loss or infiltration is a major contributor to high energy bills.

An energy audit examines the interior of the home and takes measurements of the overall size and cubic foot volume in an effort to determine the efficiency of the HVAC system and amount and type of insulation in the attic, crawlspace or basement.  With these measurements, the audit will determine how much more, if any, insulation should be added and if the HVAC system is of an age that updating should be considered to take advantage of the higher efficiency of newer systems.

Interior evaluations also include the age of inside appliances as well.  Old, outdated appliances (such as an old refrigerator, clothes washer and dryer, freezer, ect) consume significantly more energy than newer Energy Star appliances.

Updating the major appliances (HVAC system, water heater, ect) and interior appliances can save enough money to pay for the new appliances in less than 10 years, on average.

Today, going Green is the in thing.  It is good for our earth and especially good for our wallets. With a home energy audit, saving energy and money has never been easier. Start with a quality energy audit and end with a possible refund from your electric or gas provider for updating. There may even be money from Uncle Sam for some upgrades. What's better than getting money BACK from the government or your utility provider?
